Ankara, Nov 28 () - Upon the killing of the head of Diyarbakır Bar Association Tahir Elçi, head of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) Metin Feyzioğlu called all heads of bar associations in Turkey to go to Diyarbakır.
Feyzioğlu himself also departed for Diyarbakır with the executive board of TBB. He said, “This mean attack was not against our brother Tahir but against the entire Turkey.”
Feyzioğlu also said that they did not know who was behind the attack but the target was Turkey. “The target is our unity, our fraternity. For this reason we should all stand together as one against this attack. For this reason, me and my friends in the executive board of TTB are immediately departing for Diyarbakır.”
“We have called on all of our heads of bar associations. They will also come,” he said.
Curfew was imposed in the Diyarbakır town of Sur, where the attack took place.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confirmed in a speech in Balıkesir that both were killed.
"This incident shows how righteous is Turkey in its determination in struggle against terrorism," Erdoğan said, vowing to continue the struggle until the end.
Three policemen were wounded, repots said, as circumstances remained unclear. Elçi and accompanying lawyers made a press meeting on the damage of the earlier clashes in Sur before the gun shots were heard.
Doğan News Agency quoted eye witnesses a saying that one bearded man fired at Elçi, but it is still uncertain whether the bar chief was targeted.
