Öykü Altuntaş / New York, Sep 23 () - World renowned pop star Shakira has spoken at a UN event as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador World, urged that the current refugee crisis has been “one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time” and addressed Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi whose devastating image washing ashore marked European agenda.
Having spoken at a press conference held at the UN headquarters in New York, aiming to urge leaders to join “early childhood revolution” after the event entitled "Meeting of the Minds", Shakira also addressed the heart wrenching photo of drowned three-year-old Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi, whose lifeless body has washed ashore Turkey’s Bodrum coast.
“The image of that little boy washed up on a shore is a tragic one and one that we should not ignore and we should not forget. It should humanize the plight of refugees” urged Shakira and added:
“Because children should not pay the price of war…Because all of us has the responsibility today, the leaders of world and us. We need to come together and we need to demand a just exit to this humanitarian crisis ... Because the refugees deserve to have a home” said Shakira.
Having told she was aware of the concerns across Europe regarding opening doors to refugees, Shakira added, “I know there is a lot of racism underneath it all and there are also economic concerns. But I only hope that sometime soon we can have a world where human needs and rights raise above flags and borders and numbers and selfishness and racism. It is not an easy problem to resolve but I am also sure that nations coming together could find an intelligent way, solution to this urgent issue, in the name of Aylan Kurdi and Galip Kurdi, those two boys who have lost their lives”.
