Öykü Altuntaş / Ankara, Nov 24 () - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan disclaimed Russia’s statement that the Russian jet shot down in Syria was flying a kilometer from the Turkish border and said, “One of the two aircrafts that have violated our airspace has been shot down”.
Turkey's President adressed the controversial shut down of a Russian war craft "by Turkish F-16s" at a meeting held for the teachers' day on Nov. 24.
"An unidentified war craft that has violated the engagement rules despite several warnings, has been intervened" President Erdoğan said.
Erdoğan also stressed, the region in question was mostly dominated by the population of Bayırbucak Turkmens.
Turkey's right to defend its territory must be respected, he urged, adding that "Turkey was giving support to opposition groups in Syria, sincerely".
