Ahmet Can - Hürriyet / Istanbul, July 10 () - Turkey should rush to ensure it is part of a discussion about the future of 5G patents in Europe, the former head of Turkey’s Information and Communications Technologies Authority (BTK) has warned.
Tayfun Acarer said 5G technology standards are determined by a European pool called “METIS” urging Turkey to be included in the pool.
“Right now, this pool, including universities, vendors, mobile communication operators and even car manufacturers, is trying to determine 5G standards. On the other hand, vendor companies are developing their products according to these standards while they are being determined. Most importantly, they are getting 5G-related patents. Therefore, 5G patents are about to be out. When you attempt to develop 5G, patentee companies will say ‘We’ve got it.’ Moreover, you will pay a penalty. We need to join that pool” said Acarer.
In addition, Acarer pointed to the necessity of developing mobile communication products compatible with 5G standards while refraining from making the same mistakes as in the past by using different frequencies.
He added that 5G standards will be decided in 2020.
Acarer also said the total broadband frequency usage in Turkey will reach 574 Mhz, placing it on a level above the European average.
Mobile communication companies in Turkey are currently preparing for a 4G tender in August.
